Best Beaches to Learn Surfing in Spain 2026

Mejores Playas para Aprender Surf en España 2026

Have you been thinking about taking the plunge and getting on a board for a while? Summer 2026 is your moment. Spain is, without a doubt, one of the best destinations in Europe to start: we have miles of coastline, an incredible surf culture, and, above all, sandy-bottomed beaches (beach breaks) that are perfect for your first falls and white water.

But beware, not all beaches are suitable. To learn, you need gentle waves, experienced schools, and an atmosphere that makes you feel at home. Here is our selection of the 5 best spots for beginners in Spain for this summer.

1. Somo Beach (Cantabria)

Somo is probably the birthplace of surfing in the north. It is a very long beach (almost 4 km) that receives waves all year round.

  • Why it's ideal: Being so wide, you will always find a spot to practice your take-offs without feeling crowded. The bottom is fine sand and the waves in summer are usually very gentle and consistent.

  • The extra: The atmosphere in the town of Somo is 100% surf-oriented. Crossing the Bay of Santander on the "pedreñera" (boat) with your board is an experience you have to live.

2. Zarautz Beach (Basque Country)

If you are looking for the perfect balance between learning and social life, Zarautz is your place. It is the longest beach in Guipúzcoa and has seen great champions born there.

  • Why it's ideal: Its waves are very versatile. There are specific areas for schools where the white water is long and powerful, ideal for standing up from day one.

  • The extra: The pintxos after the session. Nothing restores energy better than Basque gastronomy right on the beach.

3. El Palmar Beach (Cádiz)

If sunshine and slightly warmer water are your thing, El Palmar is the mecca of surfing in the south. Although it can be challenging in winter, in summer it becomes a paradise for beginners.

  • Why it's ideal: Its sandy bottoms are very safe and the waves are usually slower than in the Cantabrian Sea, giving you that extra second you need to react on the board.

  • The extra: The sunsets. Watching the sun set as you leave the water with your board under your arm in Cádiz is priceless.

4. Razo Beach (Galicia)

Razo Beach in Carballo, A Coruña, excellent for beginners

Galicia is "the wave factory." Razo, in A Coruña, is a wild beach but very friendly to those who are just starting out.

  • Why it's ideal: It is an immense sandy area that receives a lot of force from the Atlantic, which guarantees that, even on days with less sea in summer, you will have some waves to surf.

  • The extra: It's the perfect place if you want to disconnect from the noise and connect with the purest Galician nature.

5. Famara Beach (Lanzarote)

We couldn't leave out the Canary Islands. Famara is known as the "European Hawaii" and visually, it's simply unbeatable.

  • Why it's ideal: The Famara Cliff protects the beach from certain winds, creating very clean conditions. It is a sandy beach with multiple peaks, ideal for spreading out beginner groups.

  • The extra: You can surf in swim trunks or a thin wetsuit (2/2mm) even when it gets cooler on the peninsula.

Flysurf tips for your first surf summer:

  1. Rent the right equipment: Don't try to learn with a small fiberglass board. Look for a softboard (like ours 😉) that gives you stability and safety.

  2. Respect the rules: Safety comes first. Learn the right-of-way rules in the water before entering.

  3. Don't go alone: Sign up for a local school. You'll avoid bad habits and progress ten times faster.

Do you already know what your destination will be this summer? See you in the water!
