A surf grip, also called a surf pad or traction pad, is an alternative to wax for the tail of your board. Unlike wax, the pad is permanent, won't melt in the heat, and provides consistent grip session after session. If you surf with a fiberglass board and are looking for maximum control on your back foot during maneuvers, a grip is the solution.

Types of Grips: How Many Pieces Do You Need?

Grips are manufactured in different configurations depending on the size and shape of the board:

  • 1 piece→ short shortboards and small-tailed boards. Full tail coverage in a single piece, maximum simplicity
  • 3 pieces→ standard shortboard and fish. Allows adjustment of the spacing between pieces and better adaptation to the tail shape
  • 5 pieces→ wider boards, funboards, and progressive boards. Greater coverage and positioning flexibility

Surf Pad with Arch Bar and Kick Tail: What Each Element is For

  • Arch bar→ the raised central piece where the arch of the foot rests. Provides positional reference without looking at the board, you know exactly where your back foot is

What is the difference between a surf grip and wax?

A grip is a permanent adhesive piece that is glued to the board; it is not easily applied or removed. Wax is applied and renewed for each session. The grip provides more consistent and durable grip, especially in heat where wax melts. Wax covers more surface and is more common on softboards. Many surfers use both: a grip on the tail and wax on the rest.

How many pieces should my surfboard grip have?

It depends on the width and shape of your board's tail. Small and narrow tail → 1 or 3 pieces. Wider tail (squash, round, fish) → 3 or 5 pieces to cover the surface well. If in doubt, measure the width of your tail and compare it to the dimensions of the pad before buying.

Where is the pad placed on the surfboard?

On the back of the board, just in front of the leash plug. The back edge of the pad should be 1-2 cm from the leashplug, centered on the board's axis. Before sticking it, place it dry and mark the position with masking tape — once stuck, there's no going back.

Can a grip be put on a softboard?

It's not common. Softboards have a foam or EVA deck that is not the ideal surface for the grip adhesive to stick well long-term. For softboards, wax is the recommended solution. If you have a softboard with a hard top, consult us before sticking it.
