Surfing in Galicia, organize the perfect route!
In this new chapter of surf trips through Spain, we recommend touring the coast of Galicia. Galicia, with its estuaries, cliffs, and dunes, is a true paradise for those who enjoy surfing and surf trips in a camper van. Its unique geography means that many surf spots are in secluded locations, offering incredible waves in sparsely populated environments.
Moving around is key to discovering the best waves and being able to surf in Galicia, as many are in remote areas with few services. But what might seem like an inconvenience becomes a blessing when you travel in a camper van. The freedom and flexibility that this way of traveling gives you are perfect for exploring every corner.
We propose a route full of waves for surfers of all levels. The route begins in the Rías Baixas, to the west and near Portugal, with ideal beaches to start or improve your skills. From there, we will advance towards the Rías Altas, in the heart of the Cantabrian coast, where you will find more challenging spots surrounded by spectacular landscapes.
Remember that the weather and sea conditions are crucial for the success of your surf trip. Before embarking on the adventure, check the forecasts to ensure you find the best waves. If you have doubts, don't worry: on our blog, you will find an entry dedicated to how to interpret wave and wind reports.
What are the best beaches for surfing in Galicia?
We begin our surf tour through Galicia on the beautiful Patos beach, located a few kilometers from Vigo. This beach stands out for its incredible views of the Cíes Islands, considered a natural treasure of the region. This makes it a very popular beach for surfers of all levels. This beach has different surf shops and surf camps where it is possible to buy and rent surfboards to learn.
Patos beach has several peaks along its entire length, from its western end (Pico de Patos) to the eastern end, where La Izquierda de Monteferro appears, a spot that withstands large swells. Being located near a semi-urban nucleus, it offers various services such as surf schools, clubs, and specialized shops, where you can find Flysurf surfboards.
We continue heading North towards A Lanzada beach. One of the best beaches in the Rías Baixas. This long sandy beach is located at the entrance to the O Grove Peninsula and offers long, gentle waves ideal for beginner surfers who want to learn to surf.
Because it is slightly protected, it makes it an excellent option during the winter and spring months, especially when northerly winds blow. Although it is usually quite crowded, its multiple peaks offer you one of the best beaches to learn to surf.
We continue our ascent until we reach As Furnas beach, located in the municipality of Porto do Son. Being a very exposed beach, it is a magnificent option for the summer months, when the waves and wind offer ideal conditions for enjoying surfing.
In addition, it has multiple right and left peaks, with long and gentle waves for initial surf levels, and more demanding waves for the more experienced. The best wind direction for surfing here is from the East or South.
Where to surf in Galicia?: other recommended beaches
Our next stop, Nemiña, is the westernmost point of our surf tour in Galicia. This virgin beach of enormous dimensions has a left at the mouth of the Castro river and a beach break that makes it one of the best breaks in the area. One of the reference places for Galician surfing in recent years, with fun sand waves for all levels. It is one of the most famous beginner surf beaches in Spain.
The consistency of its waves, together with the northerly winds of spring and summer, make it one of the most frequented beaches for surfing during the summer months.

We begin to turn our direction eastward, and make our next stop at Razo beach, an unmissable destination for surf lovers in Galicia. This iconic golden sand beach, almost 5 kilometers long, offers waves for surfing throughout the year. With variable beach breaks distributed along the entire beach, Razo adapts to almost all conditions and tides, becoming an essential place for any surfer. It doesn't matter if you are starting in surfing or looking to perfect your skills: this beach is ideal for enjoying the experience to the fullest. Considered one of the best beaches for surfing in Spain.
We continue until we enter the municipality of Valdoviño, a destination known for its many surf spots. However, its most precious jewel is Pantín beach, known worldwide for being the epicenter of surfing in Galicia. This beach has hosted the Pantín Classic for 35 years, the oldest surf championship in Spain, which every year attracts the best surfers in the world. This event makes Pantín a benchmark for those looking to experience the true essence of professional surfing and enjoy quality waves in a spectacular setting.
The orientation of this beach allows it to collect even the slightest swell, so there are usually waves almost all year round. In addition, being protected between cliffs, it is a good alternative for days with northeasterly winds. By working in all tides, it is an excellent option to guarantee waves on your surf trip.
Our last stop on our trip through Galician lands is Oliñas beach. A large sandy area between Ribadeo and Foz, which offers perfect waves for beginners in summer, and powerful peaks and immense tubes in winter. Because it is a very exposed coast, it is the perfect place to surf during the summer months. Its waves are perfect for surfing with small surfboards like the Flysurf fish surfboards
With this stop, we finish our surfing tour throughout Galicia. However, as we always say, the best part of a surf trip is getting lost in search of new waves to discover.
