Surf Trip in Spain: Chapter 2: Asturias – 1 week
In this chapter on surf trips for all levels, we show you a perfect route through Asturias, where you can travel across the entire province and enjoy good waves between servings of fabada. We propose a journey from East to West, passing through some of the most emblematic sites on the Asturian coast.
As we always say, surfing is 100% linked to sea conditions. So if you can, try to check the forecast before you leave. If you have doubts about how to check a wave forecast, take a look at our blog post where we talk about this. Let's get started!
First stop for surfing in Asturias
Start your journey in the Llanes area, a coastal region located at the foot of the Picos de Europa. Here you'll find beaches like San Antolín, a northwest-facing beach that can be surfed at both high and low tide and handles a good swell. In good conditions, you'll find really fun waves!

Continue your journey by visiting the picturesque Ribadesella and its beach: Santa Marina. This urban beach faces northeast, making it a good option on days with westerly winds. It handles a lot of swell and several peaks form, though you'll always find people in the water, especially in summer.
Second stop on the surf trip through Asturian lands
The next destination is Vega beach, a large, open beach facing northwest, making it a reliable spot for catching waves. Several peaks appear depending on the tide, offering good alternatives to choose from.
If you want to experience the tradition of surfing in Asturias, you can't miss Rodiles, one of the best beaches in northern Spain for surfing. The beach is located in a beautiful natural reserve and offers different possibilities. However, you must be very careful to choose a peak according to your level, as conditions near the estuary can be demanding.
If you want to visit Gijón while you're in Asturias, you can catch waves at San Lorenzo Beach. This is a busy urban beach, one of the largest in Asturias at 1.5 km long. When the swell comes in, various peaks form along the beach that usually work at all tides.
Third stop for surfing
The next stop is near Avilés, at Salinas beach. Facing northwest, it's one of the beaches that picks up the most swell in the entire Province, making it always a good option in small conditions. It's a very popular spot for longboarders and perfect for our Cold Hawaii, where you can practice your first hang tens. As it's a long beach, you can find everything along its stretch. There are countless right and left peaks, and on the Espartal side, to the west, there's a very good right-hand bar. It can be surfed from 2 to 12 feet. It handles a lot of swell. It's usually crowded with surfers, as it's close to densely populated areas.
Ending the surf trip through Asturias 🙁
Finally, we recommend ending your trip in the western part of Asturias, where you can enjoy lush nature and wonderful tranquility. Frexulfe beach is a clear example of this. A huge beach that, like most of Asturias' best breaks, faces northwest. This spot can work at all tides, although the best time is mid-tide, where you'll find numerous peaks to enjoy this paradise.

With this route, you can enjoy waves all along the Asturian coast while traveling across the province from one end to the other. That said, don't forget that the best part of a surf trip is getting lost in search of new waves to discover. So, check out our post on how waves originate and embark on your adventure!
