Do you want to know how to improve your surfing and take it to the next level? One of the practices we recommend is to get into surfskate, a sport that will allow you to work on the fundamentals of surfing out of the water with the aim of taking your surfing to its best version.
What is surfskate and why does it help improve your technique?
But first of all, we need to know what surfskate is. A surfskate is a skateboard that, thanks to a special front truck (with greater freedom of movement), allows you to imitate surfing movements out of the water. This is a great help for those who cannot enjoy surfing all year round, or who want to complement their training and technique when they are not in the water. This sport originated in Venice Beach, California, thanks to Neil Carver and Greg Falk in 1996, who later founded the Carver Skateboards brand.
Surfskating not only allows surfers to continue practicing their movements on waveless days, but it has also been very useful for perfecting the technique of those movements that are sometimes more complicated to practice in the water because they require more specific wave conditions.
Thanks to surfskate, you can practice the same movement over and over again until your body has it automated.
If you want to start practicing right now, you can take a look at our surfskate collection where you will find the perfect equipment to train your turns. This sport allows surfers to perfect movements that are difficult to practice in the water, as you don't depend on specific wave conditions. With surfskate, you can automate each maneuver through repetition.
Key maneuvers to know how to improve your surfing
Some of the maneuvers that as a beginner or intermediate surfer you can practice on the surfskate to improve your surfing are the following:
- Pumping
Pumping is the technique of surfing up and down the wave with a smooth and fluid motion. This technique allows you to use the energy of the wave to propel yourself forward and gain speed. It is a very important maneuver to be able to pass faster sections of the wave.
- Bottom Turn:
It is a maneuver performed immediately after the TAKE OFF that allows us to compress the body to accumulate all the energy of the descent and face the highest part of the wave. It helps us to have the right positioning to link and execute maneuvers safely and powerfully. When you master the Bottom Turn, a large part of your surfing journey is done.

- Cutback:
It is the most important basic surf maneuver to enjoy an entire wave. It consists of performing a 180-degree turn to go back on the wave. This allows us to return to the point of maximum wave energy (what is called the pocket) and thus always be well placed to face the next section of the wall. If you don't have the cutback mastered, you'll probably feel at some point while surfing the wave that it stops pushing you and you feel like it's not carrying you. A good way to train the cutback is by using a surfskate.
All these maneuvers usually take a long time to master in the water, so being able to practice them over and over again on dry land will help you, once you control your paddling, your pop-up and your position in the water to catch waves, to make riding the wave much simpler.
If you're looking to improve your surfing, we recommend getting into surfskating. Where to practice surfskate?
