Hacer surf en la playa

Alicante is known for its sunny climate and spectacular beaches, but what many don't know is that it also offers good conditions for surfing. Although not as consistent as other destinations, surfing in Alicante has spots for surfers of all levels. From beaches for beginners to places for experienced surfers, the Alicante coast has something for everyone. If you're looking for a less crowded surf destination, but with a vibrant atmosphere and optimal conditions, Alicante is the ideal place for you.

The Best Beaches for Surfing in Alicante

Alicante has several ideal beaches for surfing, each with its own characteristics and charm. Here are the best options to catch waves and improve your skills in this area.

  • Playa de San Juan: Located just 10 minutes from the center of Alicante, Playa de San Juan is one of the most popular surfing spots. Its soft and consistent waves make it an excellent option for beginners. In addition, it has surf schools where you can rent equipment and take lessons. During the winter months, the waves tend to be larger, ideal for those seeking a greater challenge.
  • Playa del Postiguet: Although not the best known for surfing, Playa del Postiguet, in the center of Alicante, offers perfect waves for beginners when conditions are right. Being in the heart of the urban area, it is a convenient option if you are looking for a quick surf session without straying too far from the city. It is an ideal place to learn the basics on days with moderate swells.
  • Playa de Muchavista: Located north of Playa de San Juan, Muchavista is another great spot for surfers of all levels. Here you will find more powerful waves in winter and milder conditions in summer, making it a versatile beach. In addition, being a longer and less crowded beach, you will have enough space to surf without as much competition for waves.
  • Cabo de las Huertas: For those looking for a more advanced experience, Cabo de las Huertas offers more demanding waves in its coves. This spot is known for its reef breaks, which require a higher level of experience. This beach is ideal for those who have already mastered basic techniques and want to try something new in a more challenging and wild environment.

Wave Conditions and Climate in Alicante

Alicante, located on the Costa Blanca, has a privileged climate for enjoying surfing all year round. Although not as well known for its big waves as other regions of Spain, its beaches offer good conditions for beginner and intermediate surfers.

Waves in Alicante

Waves in Alicante tend to be soft and consistent, especially during autumn and winter. The best surfing conditions occur during this time, when Mediterranean storms bring swells that generate moderate-sized waves, between 0.5 and 1.5 meters. During the summer, waves are usually smaller and less frequent, but good conditions can still be found for beginner surfers.

The beaches of San Juan, Muchavista, and Cabo de las Huertas usually have the best waves. In general, the waves in Alicante are beach breaks, meaning they break over sandy bottoms, making them safer for those who are learning. In Cabo de las Huertas, however, waves can break over rocks, so it is advisable to have more experience before venturing into this spot.

Climate in Alicante

Alicante enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and warm summers. Winter temperatures range between 12°C and 18°C, which allows surfing even in the coldest months with appropriate gear, such as a wetsuit. In summer, temperatures rise to 25°C-30°C, offering very comfortable surf sessions, although the swell is less constant.

As for water temperature, it ranges from 14°C in winter to 25°C in summer, making it essential to wear a wetsuit in the colder months, while in summer you can surf without it.

Surf Camps in Alicante

Surf camps in Alicante are becoming a popular option, especially during the summer holidays. These camps usually include accommodation, meals, and daily surf lessons, providing a complete immersion in the surfing lifestyle. Some of the most recommended camps include:

  • Campello Surf Club: This camp organizes intensive surf weeks for young people and adults. They focus on practical training in the water, but also include complementary activities such as kayaking, paddle surfing, carver, and multi-adventure.
  • De Locos Surf Shop: The school of this Surf Shop located in Guardamar del Segura is designed for those who want to improve their skills in a relaxed environment. They offer surf and paddle surf courses for all levels, from beginner to advanced.

The Mediterranean coast is not as well known for surfing as the Atlantic, but it offers a good option for surfers who want to learn. Thanks to its good climate and smaller, safer waves, beginners can easily progress in this environment.
