There are destinations that leave a lasting impression, and then there's Madeira. Imagine a volcanic island rising vertically from the Atlantic, where the green of the mountains merges with the deep blue of an ocean that constantly pumps energy. In collaboration with Visit Madeira, Flysurf headed to this paradise to experience a surf trip in Madeira that exceeded all our expectations.
A Surf Trip with Flysurf is not just about chasing waves; it's about community, constant learning, and, above all, adventure. The island gifted us epic sessions, cinematic sunsets, and that wild sense of connection that only special places retain. If you're looking for your next destination, get ready: surfing in Madeira is in a league of its own.
Why choose Madeira for your next Surf Trip?
Often overshadowed by its Canary Island neighbors, Madeira is Europe's hidden gem. Its geography is rugged, dramatic, and spectacular, creating a unique wave dynamic.
- Untouched environment: Surfing in Madeira is characterized by fewer crowds than other Atlantic destinations. Here you can still find breaks where nature rules and respect for the environment is the norm.
- Consistency: Thanks to its location in the middle of the Atlantic, the island receives powerful swells for much of the year, becoming a magnet for world-class waves.
- The perfect contrast: The logistics of a surf trip in Madeira allow you to go from a powerful morning wave session to a hike in the clouds on Pico Ruivo in the afternoon. It's the ideal balance between adrenaline and disconnection.

The best surf spots in Madeira
Madeira is famous for its rocky point breaks, but the island has hidden corners for different skill levels. On our Surf Trip, we explored the coast looking for the best conditions for the group:
Paul do Mar: The right-hand paradise
If you're looking for power and length, Paul do Mar is the place. It's one of the most iconic waves for surfing in Madeira. It's a fast, hollow right-hander that breaks over a rocky bottom (be very careful at low tide). Only suitable for advanced surfers looking for pure adrenaline in a brutal cliff environment.

Jardim do Mar: The jewel in the crown
Considered by many to be one of the best waves in the world, Jardim do Mar is not for everyone. When a good Atlantic swell comes in, this right-hander becomes an imposing beast. It's the spot where you see the true potential of surfing in Madeira, but it requires respect and a lot of experience.

Porto da Cruz: The ideal spot to progress
This is where the magic of Flysurf happens. In the Porto da Cruz area, specifically on Alagoa and Maiata beaches, we found the perfect refuge for those looking to refine their technique or have their first contact with the island.
- Unlike the southern points, the ground here is a mix of sand and rock, offering extra safety.
- It's the ideal training ground for our Surf Trip, allowing for long sessions with real progression.

Ponta Delgada: Consistency on the north coast
Located on the north coast, Ponta Delgada is known for its consistency. When the south is flat, the north usually pumps. It's an area with several peaks that work with different tides, offering an excellent alternative so you don't miss a single day of surfing in Madeira.
Machico: The eastern refuge
We couldn't leave out Machico. It's one of the few sandy beaches on the island, making it a key meeting point when the sea gets too serious on the rest of the coast. It's a mellower wave, ideal for refinement sessions during our Surf Trip, where the focus is on fluidity and enjoying the environment without the pressure of the big rocky reefs.
Achadas da Cruz: Surfing in its purest state
For those looking for the true essence of surfing in Madeira, Achadas da Cruz is a must-see, although not for every day. The access itself is an adventure: a cable car that descends a vertical cliff to a pristine fajã. Here the Atlantic hits with full force. It's a remote, exposed spot with incredible energy; surfing here is connecting directly with the wildest nature of the island.
The Flysurf experience: Much more than surfing
What differentiates a Flysurf trip from any other getaway is the logistics and the community. We don't just take you to the spot, we live surfing as a lifestyle:
- Comprehensive organization: We make sure you only have to worry about your technique and enjoying yourself. From accommodation with local essence to transfers to the best spots for surfing in Madeira.
- The right equipment: Surfing on volcanic rock requires confidence and boards with good buoyancy and control. On this trip, our boards were the perfect allies for safely entering the island's faster sections.
- Local connection: Thanks to the collaboration with Visit Madeira, we were able to integrate into the island's culture, respecting the ocean's rhythms and enjoying the hospitality of its people.

Practical Information for your Surf Trip in Madeira
Organizing a surf trip to Madeira requires some strategic planning. Here are the basics we learned on our last Surf Trip:
- Best time: Although there are waves all year round, the golden season runs from September to May. North Atlantic swells come in strong and consistently, providing those epic sessions we look for at Flysurf.
- Wetsuit: Madeira has an enviable water temperature (between 18°C and 22°C). A 3/2mm is usually sufficient for most of the year, although if you get cold easily or come in the middle of winter (January/February), a 4/3mm will allow you to extend your sessions without feeling it.
- Essential transport: Forget public transport if you want to surf. To make the most of surfing in Madeira, you need to rent a car (preferably with some power for the island's endless hills) and move between the north and south looking for the best wind.
Pro Logistics: How to check your boards for Madeira without dying in the attempt
One of the main concerns when organizing a trip with Flysurf is the equipment. Flying to Madeira with boards requires a bit of planning, but it's totally worth it to surf with your own gear on such high-quality waves.
Airlines and Fees: Most flights to Funchal (Madeira) are operated by TAP Air Portugal, Iberia or EasyJet. TAP is usually the favorite among surfers because it allows you to include surf equipment (up to 32kg and 2 meters) easily by paying an extra fee of approximately 40 to 70 euros, although we always recommend checking the fare contracted, as some include sports equipment if you book in advance.

What to do in Madeira when there are no waves (or your arms give up)
The collaboration with Visit Madeira allowed us to discover that this island is much more than its breaks. When the sea rests, the adventure continues:
- Explore the Levadas: You can't leave without trekking through the famous levadas. Walking towards Pico Ruivo will make you feel like you're above the clouds. It's the perfect leg workout for the next day in the water.
- Porto Moniz Natural Pools: A relaxing swim in volcanic rock pools bathed by the ocean. The ideal place to recover muscles after an intense session in Jardim do Mar.
- Local Gastronomy: You have to try the Madeiran Espetada (meat on a laurel skewer) and, of course, toast with a Madeira Wine or a cold Poncha at sunset. It's part of the Flysurf ritual!
