Ready for the most intense year of elite surfing? The 2026 World Surf League (WSL 2026) isn't just another season; it's the 50th anniversary of the world tour and comes with changes that promise to bring epic excitement back to every stop. From an increase in women's spots to a calendar that extends until December, here's everything you need to know.
World Surf League 2026 Calendar and Dates
This year's calendar is a world tour in search of the "perfect wave." It is divided into three key blocks that define who stays in the elite and who falls into the abyss of relegation.
1. The Australian Block and New Zealand's Debut
The WSL Championship Tour 2026 season kicks off strongly in the Southern Hemisphere. This year, Australia regains its historical prominence with three consecutive stops before jumping to one of the big novelties: Raglan.
- Bells Beach (April): The tradition of ringing the bell lives on. A long, heavy-walled wave that punishes reading errors.
- Margaret River (April): The place where the power of the Indian Ocean tests rail-to-rail surfing and bravery in the "Box."
- Snapper Rocks (May): The return of the "Superbank." We will see if the world's most perfect right-hand wave once again offers those infinite barrels that made it famous.
- Raglan, New Zealand (May): The big news! One of the longest and most consistent left-hand waves on the planet enters the tour to give goofy-footers an advantage.
2. The "Mid-Season Cut": The Moment of Truth
After the El Salvador stop in June, comes the dreaded mid-season cut. Only the top-ranked surfers (22 men and 12 women) will maintain their spot on the WSL Championship Tour 2026 for the second half of the year. The rest will drop to the Challenger Series to try and re-qualify.
3. The Final Stretch: From Teahupo'o's Barrels to Abu Dhabi's Pool
After the cut, the tour becomes more selective and dangerous:
- Teahupo'o (August): The "Wall of Skulls" in Tahiti. There's no room for error here; it's the most critical barrel event of the year.
- Fiji (August/September): Cloudbreak is once again the stage for the most fluid and powerful maneuvers over coral.
- Surf Abu Dhabi (October): The new frontier. A state-of-the-art artificial wave pool in the United Arab Emirates that guarantees perfect conditions, eliminating the luck factor of the ocean.

Major Changes for WSL 2026: What's New This Year?
Goodbye to the "World Surf League Finals"
The single-day format to decide the champion at Trestles is gone. In the WSL 2026, the title will once again be awarded based on accumulated points. The Pipe Masters will be the final event and will be worth 1.5 times more points, ensuring that the champion is crowned on the world's most dangerous wave.
More Women on Tour
One of the big pieces of news is the expansion of the women's roster: we go from 18 to 24 surfers, further equalizing the format and giving new talents from the Challenger Series a chance.
"Sudden Death" Format
Forget about consequence-free elimination rounds. From the first heat, the format will be head-to-head (man-on-man). If you lose, you're out. This guarantees maximum intensity from minute one of every WSL 2026 event.
How to Watch the World Surf League Tournament 2026 Live and Schedules
Following the tour from Spain or Latin America requires a bit of coffee due to time zone changes, but accessibility is total:
YouTube and Official Website: The World Surf League broadcasts all events live and for free through its YouTube channel and the World Surf League app.
Red Bull TV: They often feature replays and exclusive content from the most critical moments.
Movistar+ (Spain): Usually broadcasts summaries and the final stages of the most important events.
World Surf League 2026 Schedules
For the stages in Australia and New Zealand, be prepared to wake up early (or stay up late), as heats usually start around 11:00 PM or midnight Spanish time. For the stages in Brazil, El Salvador, and the USA, afternoons of "binge-watching" in front of the screen are guaranteed.
Favorites for the WSL 2026 Title: Who Will Dominate the New Format?
With the switch to an accumulated points system, the strategy changes. It's no longer enough to have one good day at Trestles; you have to be a competitive animal for 12 months. These are the names that will be on everyone's shortlists:
- John John Florence: With the season finale at Pipeline, John John is the man to beat. He plays at home and is probably the best barrel rider in the world. If he makes it to December, the title has his name on it.
- Caroline Marks: The current benchmark for solid surfing. Her ability to read heavy waves like Teahupo'o or Cloudbreak makes her the favorite to inaugurate the new 24-surfer women's roster.
- Filipe Toledo: After his break, the Brazilian returns hungry. Although Pipeline isn't his strong suit, his dominance in maneuver-focused waves like Snapper Rocks or El Salvador will allow him to reach the final phase with a massive points lead.
- Griffin Colapinto: The most consistent surfer of recent years. If the WSL Championship Tour 2026 rewards consistency, Griffin will be fighting for his first world title until the very last heat.
Flysurf's Predictions: Who will conquer the World Surf League 2026?
At Flysurf, we've already started making our bets. With the new format that rewards consistency and that epic finale at Pipeline, we believe that "heavy wave specialists" have a brutal competitive advantage.
Our Flysurf bet:
- In the men's division: We bet on the triumphant return of Gabriel Medina. After a restful 2025, the Brazilian returns thirsty for his fourth title, and Pipeline is his playground.
- In the women's division: We believe that Molly Picklum will deliver the decisive blow. Her progression in critical waves places her a step ahead of the new generation.
